With the “iconic turn”, which many theoreticians have localized in the 1980s and 1990s, the world is no longer read as a text but rather perceived as an image. While the notion of the iconic turn has inspired the theoretical debate in visual culture during the last two decades, it had little impact in the realm of architecture. On the occasion of Miroslav Sik’s exhibition in the Swiss Pavilion at the 13th Architecture Biennale in Venice and the reappraisal of his role as protagonist of Analogue Architecture, we want to ask how the notion of the image enables us to better understand the history and present situation of architecture. Have images helped architecture to transgress limits of language, culture and economic classes and strengthen its role as communicative element, or are they responsible for a homogenization of globalized architecture? Have they improved the situation of architectural representation or made it more uniform? Will the star of the image continue to rise or is its light fading?
