57th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia
13 May - 26 Nov 2017
General Information
The 57th International Art Exhibition takes place in Venice from 13 May to 26 November 2017 (Press Preview 10, 11 and 12 May 2017) at the Giardini and at the Arsenale as well as at various venues in the city. The main exhibition is curated by Christine Macel

The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia has appointed Philipp Kaiser to curate the exhibition at the Pavilion of Switzerland in 2017. His exhibition entitled «Women of Venice» will feature new work by artists Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler and Carol Bove.

Curator Koyo Kouoh is responsible for the «Salon Suisse» 2017 entitled ATARAXIA, a programme of talks and events supplementing the exhibition at the Swiss Pavilion, which takes place at the Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi. Partner of the «Salon Suisse» is Laufen Bathrooms AG

Salon Suisse

ATARAXIA: As a word Ataraxia is equivocal, but never neutral. From the Greek a - «not» and tarássein «to disturb», twist it further and it spits back apathy.

Salonnière: Koyo Kouoh
Co-Salonniers: Samuel Leuenberger (independent curator), L.via P.ldi (curator), Rasha Salti (curator, writer and researcher) and farid rakun (researcher and artist)
Location: Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi, Dorsoduro 810, Vaporetto stop: Zattere

«Salon Suisse» presents ATARAXIA, this year’s talks and events programme running in parallel with the exhibition at the Pavilion of Switzerland at the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Organised by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia in collaboration with Dakar-based RAW Material Company, the collateral talks programme offers a platform for exchange on contemporary art and thought in a stimulating atmosphere. The programme will take place over the course of the opening event and three subsequent long weekends.

Swiss Pavilion

Philipp Kaiser has invited artists Carol Bove and Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler to show their work in the exhibition «Women of Venice» at the Pavilion of Switzerland. With the project Kaiser aims to explore Alberto Giacometti’s absence in the history of the Swiss Pavilion. During his lifetime, Giacometti declined all requests for him to exhibit his work there.

Philipp Kaiser, nominated as curator of the Swiss Pavilion by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, outlines his concept as follows: «The exhibition «Women of Venice» aims to reflect on the history of the Pavilion and Switzerland’s contributions to the Venice Biennale from a contemporary perspective, and to initiate new work, specific to this context.»

Curators in Conversation: Philipp Kaiser and Katy Siegel
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
Independence Avenue at Seventh Street, SW, Washington, District of Columbia 2002

Representing their respective countries at the 57th annual Venice Biennale, Swiss curator Philipp Kaiser and US curator Katy Siegel come together to discuss the art of curating on a major international platform. Kaiser’s pavilion brought together new work by contemporary artists Carol Bove and the duo Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler to pay tribute to Alberto Giacometti, who, though one of the most well-known Swiss artists, had never shown at the international exhibition. Siegel co-curated the United States Pavilion with a new site-specific series of works by celebrated LA-based artist Mark Bradford, whose monumental painting Pickett’s Charge recently opened in the Hirshhorn’s Third Level inner-circle galleries. Along with a discussion of Bradford’s installation and Art Basel Miami, where Kaiser curates the Public Sector, the curators highlight their various projects and offer insight into the art world today.
